The University of Missouri Columbia, commonly known as Mizzou or simply Missouri, is a coeducational public research university located just south of downtown Columbia, which is a city in the state of Missouri that was once part of the Mississippian culture, and home to the Mound Builders. The city was first populated by the Missouri and Osage Indians, until the European explorers arrived in the area.
MU was founded in 1839, as the first public institution of higher learning, west of Mississippi River, as part of the Geyer Act. The land where the university was constructed, belonged to James S. Rollins, also known as the ‘’father of the university’’. Due to the fact that MU significantly blossomed in late 19th century, in 1870, it was awarded with the land-grant status.
Today, MU is known as one of the 44 public universities, which are members of the Association of American Universities, and the only public university, as well as the largest one in Missouri. There are nearly 250 000 students which are attending MU, worldwide, with almost half continuing to reside in Missouri. The university is also the single university in the state to be among the 6 universities in USA, with a school of veterinary medicine, medicine, law, engineering and agriculture, all on campus.
The athletic teams which represent MU are known as the Missouri Tigers, who compete in the Big 12 Conference, and the university is the only one in the state to have all its sports in the NCAA Division I, which is the nation’s highest level of college sports. The Tigers sports teams compete in various sports, which include soccer, football, tennis and volleyball, as well as basketball, in which they have a total of 22 appearances in the NCAA tournament.
